While people practice meditation to achieve an altered state of consciousness, some AmerIndians use peyote in religious rites. Altered States of Consciousness (ASC) are considered an extraordinary human experience and it's believed that they can occur spontaneously.
The CIA’s covert experiments involving psychedelic drug LSD to induce ASCs for “mind kontrol” are the most well-known of the experiments involving psychics and mind control. The general public didn’t know the Central Intelligence Agency was giving people LSD without their knowledge or consent for these experiments. It's said that the CIA branch known as the Office of Scientific Intelligence — disbanded in 1963 — was primarily involved in these experiments.
These experiments became public knowledge in the mid 1970s. Although the CIA intentionally destroyed most of the records in 1972, there are indications that the experiments continued into the 1970s.
