On three consecutive days, Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani has appeared before the court in Rasht, Gilan Province, Iran, and each time he refused to give up his Christian faith, despite the judge's repeated requests. Nadarkhani now faces the very real possibility that he will be executed by hanging for apostasy, reports the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran on September 29, 2011. Nadarkhani's lawyer still holds out hope that he will be acquitted.

First arrested and tried in late 2009, Nadarkhani, a 34-year-old Christian Pastor and married father of two boys, was found guilty of apostasy—renouncing Islam. He was sentenced to death unless he would recant his Christian faith, which he has never done. His wife was arrested and jailed also but her sentence was overthrown.

Execution "At Any Time"

A personal friend of Nadarkhani, Firouz Sadegh-Khandjani, a Member of the Council of Elders for the Church of Iran, speaking in an interview on ACLJ Radio September 28, 2011, described the course of events leading up to Nadarkhani’s arrest, sentencing, and subsequent appeal.
