As described by wikipedia.org, Facebook was launched by Mark Zuckerberg in February 2004, whilst he was a student at Harvard University, Massachusetts.

The site was initially limited to Harvard students, but then expanded to other colleges, followed by universities and high schools, and finally, the general public. Eventually, Facebook became the global phenomenom it is today, having accumulated more than 500 million users globally by July 2010.
